Stanford Starts Season Friday Night With 6 Starters Out Including The Always-Injured CB Holder And Center Burkett
By Dave Levine
If Stanford fans had hoped for a bright beginning in 2018 against San Diego State and USC in the second week, their hopes were dashed finding out that 6 starters are out, most on the defense where they can ill-afford any injuries.
The two most important players of the 6 are CB Alijah Holder and C Jesse Burkett. Stanford has no speed at CB without Holder. Murphy (the CB on the other side) got beat badly last year.
The 2018 season will go the way of the 2017 season if Coach Shaw plays “conservative” again–little blitzing, running on first and second down, etc. Without Burkett, the offensive line lacks continuity. Costello will be under a lot of pressure and support for Love/the running game will be suspect.
Shaw won’t tell the media about the injuries to these players, unlike USC’s coach. USC has a massive injury list. However, it should be noted that CB Holder reinjured his right shoulder last season and missed many games. If Burkett’s injury is to one of his knees, it could be a long season for Stanford.
