#21 Stanford Upsets Another #9 Team, Notre Dame, Their Second In Three Weeks In The Final Regular Season Game, Love Has 125 Yards, Costello Passes For 4 Touchdowns
By Dave Levine
Coach Shaw was coaching a pretty lousy game, AGAIN, but I have to believe that the assistant coaches in the booth upstairs called some excellent late third quarter and fourth quarter “change-ups” which defensively caused an interception and a special teams double hit that caused a fumble recovered by Stanford. Coach Shaw finally let Costello pick the not-so-fighting-Oirish apart in the fourth quarter.
Stanford scored 28 points in the second half. Costello looked brilliant in that half after having been dinged up.
Game ball to Costello for throwing 4 tds and “guts” award to Love who again played injured and still ran for 125 yards.
By the way, though Costello on threw to him once, WR Donald Stewart made an excellent catch showing his hands are “the best” going into next year. I can only hope that Costello looks for him against USC.
Stanford just beat another #9 team–Washington–a few weeks ago (Washington WAS ranked #9 at the time). Not bad for a #21 team, eh? At 1-2, I didn’t believe they’d lose just one more game (against Washington State in the snow), but they proved me wrong, bless ’em!
Next up–a rematch with USC on Friday down the road in Santa Clara for the PAC-12 Championship.
Stanford should get a New Year’s Day bowl invite–this one hopefully well north of the Mexico Border!
